History
No one who travels the highways and byways of the Santa Cruz coast soon forgets its magnificent ocean vistas and vast carpets of redwood and pine trees. If you're lucky enough to spend part of your day on the fairways of DeLaveaga Golf Course, you'll just enhance the memory of this extraordinary slice of the world. Several of the 18 holes provide views of the Pacific, which churns just over three miles away. Carved into the canyons of an 800-acre park that was gifted to the City of Santa Cruz in the early 1900s, DeLaveaga was built in 1970 as a par-70 shot maker's paradise. Architect Bert Stamps created narrow landing areas and small, challenging greens to test players of every skill level. Despite its short length (just over 6,100 yards), strong iron play and a sharp mental game are requirements to post a good number here. It helps that there are no homes or public streets slicing through the course— just modestly priced public golf in a setting of stirring, immodest beauty. Learn more
