History
A gorgeous canvas of sky, redwood and river inspired famed designer Dr. Alister MacKenzie when he laid out Northwood Golf Club in the Sonoma County hamlet of Monte Rio back in 1928. The architect of Augusta National and Cypress Point was commissioned to build the course so members of the Bohemian Grove, located across the river from the course, could have a place to play during their summer retreat. The result of Dr. MacKenzie's efforts is a sensational, highly-walkable course where the painting-like setting includes towering California redwoods and the Russian River as it meanders its way to the Pacific a few miles downstream. Like most MacKenzie designs, Northwood doesn't rely on length to test its golfers, instead requiring calculated shot selections and risk-reward challenges on each and every hole. Ranked the #1 9-hole public course in America by Golf World, it's no wonder that golfers from every corner of the country make their way to West Sonoma County to experience MacKenzie's lone nine-hole course, which remains just as the Doctor left it.
